A cliff castle is a defensive enclosure created by building one or more stone or earth ramparts with accompanying external ditches, across a coastal headland, in order to divide it from the mainland. Many cliff castles contain Iron Age round houses, some even contain field systems. It is not certain whether all cliff castles were occupied.
